Lots of crafty fun! spent this morning crafting up 3 new whales, and last night I created a knitted boy with some gorgeous wool left over from my mums jersey. So cool! They have all been listed on Etsy and Trademe, so feel free to go take a look :)

I've decided to keep my livejournal for my "personal" ramblings, and this blog for my crafty goings on and finds. Speaking of which, I would like to reccomend the beautiful little buttons at Sugarloop. I can't remember whether I've already posted that, but I bought a few and they were so adorable! :) Highly reccommended!

Well yeah, as said, the livejournal will have more of my day to day goings on and this will be reserved for crafty updates. Please take a look at the whales though, I've just decided I'm going to save up and go on holiday as I will not be able to afford to for about 5 years unless I go awfully soon.....!

Seeming as my livejournal is just so damn easy to update, im finding myself drawn to it and posting quite a lot....

I have been upto a few crafty things lately, but I just haven't had the motivation to share it with the world.....I've made parrot cushions and my fabulous new bag, but as I said, I'm just lazy.......

Heading off to Queensgate tomorrow, and made some gorgeous choccy cupcakes today. I've been productive! ;)

postitive thinking

Life goes on. Someone close to us is very sick, and I hope that she will pull through. She has pulled through things before, however, I am not so sure this time......However, her positive thinking is amazing. So we will all be strong, and positive, for her. I think it just gave me a shock, two weeks ago the doctors said she would be fine and could stop the chemo. I just hope things will be okay....

I will try and stop thinking about that for a moment, and try and be positive and think of other things. For some reason, whenever I goto post at someones typepad account (and some other ones...I can't remember which) it comes up saying I'm a spammer? I don't post very often and I don't know why I would be blocked. I hope I haven't done anything wrong :( If anyone knows why this has happening, please let me know...

As for the happy whale front, I have sold 5! To me, that is a lot. Sales seem to have ceased off now, but It will get there eventually, I'm sure. I have such a great time making them, I hope people will continue to buy :) Here's one of the chaps I have thrown together lately.....

Teddy has been in the Wairarapa this week so I've just been spending a lot of time crafting, studying and sleeping. Managed to get my weekly go-and-feed-the-ducks-and-squeaky-geese visit in too, because of course that's so important! :) It's quite relaxing though, being largely on your own. Went into Wellington yesterday (on the train! Been awhile since I've done that!!), weather was really quite nice and did a heck of a lot of walking. Have started to work on a birdy messenger bag too....Will post when its done, its really looking quite nice!

I was so delighted to recieve my gorgeous birdy cards from Teresa at Sewing Stars. It makes me want to buy more international crafty things! I love recieving mail, its just so lovely to recieve something nice and handcrafted. I did get paid yesterday....hmmmm I'll have to be on the lookout.....;)

Well, its back to work tomorrow. Back to old ladies buying the wrong size clothes for their grandchildren and trying to get their money back. Oh well! At least the Space Shuttle arrived home safely. I remember when it blew up last time It terrified me....I had always been really interested in space travel and admired their work, as pointless as it seems sometimes....I'll leave you with this gorgeous time lapse photo from Airliners.com that was taken of Discovery taking off :)

After the extreme excitement of selling something at my Etsy store I released I was going to have to pay fees to withdraw the items. After all of this I only get about 3.15US for each whale, which I lovingly make :( Of course this customer will get the whale at the cheaper price, but I had to bump up the price accordingly so it was viable for me to continue - so Happy Whales on Etsy for international customers are now 5.50 USD. Hopefully you can all understand what I'm doing here, I'm not trying to rip anyone off, but 3.15 isnt very much :(

But I'm so happy I have sold something! Already! Off to post him! :)

I finally have my Etsy store up and running and have made lots of changes to Happy Whale Productions! The little whales are now available slightly easier for worldwide purchase at $4.50US (and unfortunately $4 postage - international postage rates are not kind and this is the cheapest I can find!). They are also still available for New Zealanders for $6 plus $2.20 postage through TradeMe. So if you have time, please go and have a looksy at my little whales, I've just filled a few orders and I'm hoping for some more :)

I finished my essays, have made my hoody and am currently ticking along nicely. Pictures will soon follow :)

Chuck Taylor Sneakers. They're only $49.99 at the Shoe Warehouse, and everyone knows they're pretty hardy buggers. Might pick some up to wear to Uni next year.
Some nice Suede boots I found in Ezibuy...yes I must sound like a royal cheapie but they're really nice, and only $40.00. Can't pass on that. Or $5 underwear.
MORE sewing materials from spotlight. I really, really want to make a messenger bag. I will make a messenger bag. And I still need to make that hoodie...

If you live in New Zealand - have you seen the current Elizabeth Arden Gift with Purchase? I'm a sucker for those things.....I got a beautiful purse with mirror, mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick etcetc last time.....I really dont need another one, but..........its so pretty!

HTML is not my friend

After several perplexing hours trying to create a new design for this website, I have once again failed miserably. My limited knowledge of HTML (and a brain that seems limited in almost every way!) has meant that, once again, this blue and green shocker will remain. I do like the birds though. Birds are neat.

Speaking of birds, for the last few weeks as I have headed part Cedar Drive there have been a gang of geese hanging about. On Friday they were heading one by one across the busy road, yesterday they were poddling about on someones garden and (presumably) eating the newly laid lawn seed. Whenever we pulled over to look at them, they quacked and honked quite happily but never seem too bothered. Today, we pulled over with some old English muffins that were no longer quite as tasty as they were supposed to be. The bloody geese went berserk. I'm not sure if they thought that by exiting the car, we were entering their teritory, but they were angry. After several minutes of screeching and lifting of wings (they seemed to have a rather large 1m wingspan...) I ran back to the car in refuge, and went and gave the muffins to the appreciative and non-scary ducks of Otihanga. Those other chaps were rather scary.

I still haven't finished my essay, or my media studies assignment for that matter. Tomorrow is another day, I keep telling myself. Once I get started I'm fine, I just find it awfully hard to account for occurances in the past..... It's rather easy to get something slightly wrong when you're covering 200 something years. It's a bit worrying that everyone else on the course is 30+..... I feel very young and uneducated alongside these people. Alas, I will go on. I will do it tomorrow. I will MAKE myself do it tomorrow.

It's been a busy day, starting with my MeNZ jab (not half as bad as last time - Susan Wood should just get over complaining!) , wasting all that time with designs and later heading off to Fishermans Table for tea. So tomorrow, I will study. Must get started on my hoodie as well, I'll post the neat fabric I found for bargain prices. I've finally registered for paypal and gotten a credit card too - watch out crafty world, I'll be buying up large. I just hope my incentive from work comes through this week...

Just buzzing along to me snazzy little Ipod....go the Foo Fighters. 'There is Nothing Left to Lose' is 10 up on the new album...not quite as wonderful as I was hoping for.

Someone is watching one of my whale auctions, and that makes me happy :) I'm trying to push away the quite voice that says its probably my sister, so *fingers crossed* maybe its someone else! ;)

Well, as I am running short on money and high on creative energy (and I have an abundance of fabric!!) I have decided to create happy whale productions - my very own whale selling website! I am also selling them on trademe for the extremely inflated price of SIX DOLLARS (excluding postage)....about $5 USD. So come on - buy a whale! I'm not trying to force anything on anyone, but heck, I just thought I'd give it a go...they're made with love ;)

Haven't been upto a whole lot else lately, mainly University work - preparing a media brief and working on an essay acknowlodging the changes which occured to (European) families during the 19th Century. So if anyone has any brilliant ideas, I'm dying to hear them!

Been busy lately - just thought I'd add a few of my crafty goings on!

First of all, my handsome All Black cat. So happy about how he turned out! I just made the shorts and shirt without a pattern so was very surprised to find them fitting so well! Looks a bit tall and lanky...can be Chris Jack cat ;)

Also made this wallet from a tutorial on Craftster - SO easy to make! And turns out really, really well! Also very happy with the results of this chap...

Finally, just because shes so lovely, heres a picture of my pusscat, patches!

Perhaps it's just a lapse going on, but I really have nothing to say! Hope everyone is doing well :)

whale of a time

Yes, I've found a new fad - creating whales. After a pretty simple pattern I made up whilst away at Massey, I have perfected the art to a whale per hour. They're quite cute too, with their giant (vacant??) smiles and patterned bodies. So now the whale creating machine has been oiled, and I'm making an awful lot of them. Now its just what to do with them!! I also made myself a nice zippered pouch with a lining of the pineapple fabric - excuse the poor quality of the photos and my embrodiery, it was my first attempt ever, really :)

Have not been up to an awful lot lately - just been working (oh, the joy of working in a toy shop during school holidays...) and suffering from a whole lot of migraines. not a lot of fun really, and considering I should be studying a lot more the stress seems to compound...aw well. Received some neat stuff from my sister that just returned from Melbourne - two more boys for my Wild Republic collection (the fairy/little blue penguin is very screechy!!) and the coolest card ever - just look at it!! She also had some lovely photos - check out these handsome guys and the coolest clock ever (which also apparently played waltzing matilda)!!

Unfortunately enough, I have recently become interested in the TV program "Lost". Yes, that is the same Lost that just finished, and will be gone until mid 2006. Catching up half way through isn't easy however, but there is a HUGE amount of websites dedicated to it, and this one was particularily helpful with bringing me up to speed - and its nicely designed to boot!

Finally, I will leave you with the most random paragraph I have read in awhile. From the book "Status Anxiety" by Alain De Botton (a really random study into the facets of society which determine our quests for love and acceptance) which was given to me as a prize from my high school. All the young kids got Guinness Book of Records, sadly, I was given this strange peace of literature. However, this quote of Gerard De Nerval, breaking from the confines of "acceptable pets" and gaining a lobster, took my fancy....

"Why should a lobster be any more ridiculous than a dog? or any other creature that one chooses to take for a walk? I have a liking for lobsters. They are peaceful, serious creatures. They know the secrets of the sea, they don't bark, and they dont gnaw upon ones monadic privacy like dogs do. And Goethe has an aversion to dogs, and he wasn't mad."

That made my day. Now I want a lobster!

Well, that was an interesting week! Went up to Palmerston early (too early!!!) on Monday morning, and attended 2 days of lectures from 9-5. Shockingly, 3 people turned up. I knew not very many people were enrolled, but 3? THREE? From the 20,000 or so extramural students? Needless to say it was actually quite helpful, although I felt slightly sorry for the lecturers - one had returned back from Scotland to teach....3 people. It's strange though, as the topic ("The Family in Western Society in History") was actually not that interesting to me in the first place - but as the course went on, it became quite interesting. With the other topic (The World Since 1900) however.....I had been interested in it before the contact course....and following the first day I couldn't even be bothered going back. The lecturer was so boring and a rather snappy sort of character. Unfortunately a "family emergency" (coughshoppingcough) meant I had to return early. What a pity.

Had a nice time up in the Manawatu though - spent most of it obviously at the university in the pretty humanities building - but Wednesday was a nice change of pace. Went up to Ashurst and visited - of all things - the Meridian Energy wind farm. After driving to town and wondering just how big they actually were, a random local showed us how to get to the top of the hills. Boy, were they huge. And surprisingly quiet! I can't believe there is so much controversy over them being installed in the hills behind Wellington - you could barely here them considering their massive size (something like 70 metres) and I think they looked quite interesting. If you squint really hard at the thumbnail below (or act smartly and click on it!) you can possibly see the 6ft chap standing next to the base - now, thats a giant windmill.

Whilst we were there we also visited the Herb Farm, which was quite pretty (probably a hell of a lot nicer when things were flowering!) but had some really different cosmetics and skin products at really good prices. Victoria Esplanade gardens was also really lovely too, we actually just went to feed the ducks but as we turned a corner I was delighted to see....Aviaries!!!! I was delighted at how well kept they were (considering the state of most of New Zealand's public aviaries..) and the presence of a nice happy keeper and some lovely birds. The New Zealand Rugby Museum was completely awesome too, they should be charging more then $5.00 for entry. Such a great array of stuff, and a lot of it pre 1950s. Recieved my latest copy of NZ Birdz in the mail today - as always a lovely little magazine. Just thought I would plug it, as apparently its membership numbers are dwindly and for a magazine its really quite interesting. I've had articles of my own in it and they incourage reader submissions - so If you're interested in birds and would like to have something published, get in touch with them! They'd probably really appreciate it :)

Got some nice fabrics whilst I was up north - some very retro 70ish prints of pineapples and flowers, along with ladybug prints - all $1.50 a metre!! Was very happy to find those. Looking to make a little whale and an "All Black" cat - have started designing patterns but am slightly busy at the moment so we will just have to see when they get going!!

Finally, for anyone that is affected by the London bombings, my thoughts are with you. Heard of the tragedy whilst watching Fight for Life last night...ironically against the British. Realised how horrific it really was when after 40 minutes regular programming hadn't returned....returned home today to hear 37 dead. I just can't believe that these things happen. In a world that supposedly so advanced, prepared and technological, we still struggle with the most basic of human emotions - hatred.

No posts for a few days. I'm heading up to Massey in Palmerston through Friday to attend some lectures (and do a bit of shopping!) so I'll be slightly busy and away from computers. I'm sure you all will miss me :)

Much cheers to Bob Geldof for pulling off Live 8. Lets hope it has some sort of influence in the not too distant future. On a side note, I wrote to the SPCA last night about the state of a poor Cockatoo at a local pet shop. Having my own lovies (or click here for a truely spooky photo of one!) I just felt horrible knowing that poor bugger was sitting there bored and poorly fed. If someone can afford a cockatoo, they can afford to feed it.

A final photo before I go, relating to my above post - my strange cockatoo! You can't see from the photo his flowery tail and underwings but i assure you they are there :) Just his beak leaves a little to be desired! For a prototype, however, I think he's kinda cute.

And to Daniel Carter, well done buddy. You've done a country proud!

Ah, just watching our wonderboy daniel carter score another try for the mighty all blacks!. And score the conversion from the most difficult point on the try line. His mother must be very proud. As the announcers have summed up so well... "johnny wilkinson can only look on in dismay."

Now I am at the best of times a very keen supporter of rugby, (having played for a year myself and watched it about a bazillion times in my life) but there is something about a test match that seems to bring even the most hardy anti rugby-ites out from their shell. It's nice, for a country that is rather culturally split and usually snapping at each other. And I really would like to see those smarmy British that paid 300 pounds for their tickets have to walk away red faced from another disaster of a game...whats the bet the British management will have another excuse tomorrow? My favourite part of the article -

Yes, today was my ACTUAL birthday. Considering I had to work my old 9 - 5.30, it was pretty good. Busy as hell today - did 6500 on one till! The people at work were kind enough to give me some lovely earrings too...definately makes you feel nice, working at a place where people actually seem to care about you :)

Created myself a lovely little cockatoo last night - well, he was a little bizarre looking but having made the pattern myself I would come to expect that. Will post a photo later, all I have sitting around is my camera phone and that probably won't do the job! Would love to pick up some more neat fabrics in New Zealand though.....I wonder whether anyone knows anywhere good? I seemed to have a random surge of about 40 visitors on one day and now it seems to have fallen back to its old 1 per day. Oh well, life goes on...

Also, another random question - anyone know of any stockists (particularily with online stores) of dickies within new zealand?

I fear this is a fruitless task considering the amount of visitors I am likely to recieve!! :)

I've been working on some new layouts, and if you were the one person who visited yesterday (!!) you may have seen one of my unfortunate attempts. They look good in theory but look pretty awful once they get going. My Limited HTML knowledge does not in any way help this, and I can all but admire the many people that can ACTUALLY design websites. However, I guess I will just keep trying with what knowledge I have, considering the fact that my brain fails to take in much of what I give it these days!!

On a final note, I am addicted to shiny shiny. Call me a slave to the consumer machine, but if I see something on there, I really, really want it.

I have only just realised that I have not capitalized ANY of my previous posts. Now to me, that is just ridiculous. For someone that did very well in English at school, I have proved rather intellectually stretched. From now on - capitalization is the way. Hurrah!

I woke up this morning to find two very nice things in the mail - my tax rebate (woohoo!) and a lovely birthday card from my friend Nicole in Australia. Considering I haven't heard from her in 6 months and its likely no one in New Zealand will even remember my birthday, I was very touched to actually recieve a card. Since leaving high school I seem to have drifted from, well, everyone - perhaps it's because I dont enjoy getting drunk every weekend or going clubbing that I find myself slightly detached. I guess studying Massey Universities extramural program doesnt help, as I work largely from home, but I am only just turning 18 now and wanted to wait before I headed into University....to everyone it seems that Massey isnt even a REAL university. Its just fabulous, I tell you, really disregarded because you like animals and crafts and the music deemed crap pop punk by everyone. However, I battle on, hoping there are people out there the same as I....I sure as well hope so anyway!!

On a happier note, recieving my presents from my parents was nice. I was lucky enough to recieve -

1. A lovely pink leather case for my ipod which is hiding inside...considering my track record with dropping breakable items, this was much appreciated!

2. To enlighten my birdyness....a book on the "Birds of America", and a Crimson Rosella to join the rest of my Wild Republic collection.

3. The dvd of Cleopatra! Hell, that was a surprise. Apprently Mum picked it up in Australia earlier in the year, and it definately looks pretty neat. I've always been fascinated with the movie, if not for the actual screenplay but the depth and detail of the things like the sets and costuming...a very neat present!

That was, of course, amongst other things. Mum was very happy to be able to surprise me with lots of random things. Considering I usually have to choose my own presents it definately made for a nice change!

As per usual I've been scooting about the internet looking at craft projects, and I was so happy to come across a bird in the hand. The birds on the website are just fabulous, it's beyond me how some people are so creative. My crafty projects usually tend to be lopsided and well.....very "home made" looking. This birds are gorgeous! I'm very tempted to buy one...or at least save up for one - the US dollar price barrier is not so friendly to us upon minimum wage! Considering I only earn $150.00 USD per week, and have to save $110.00 for my transfer to Victoria University next year.....Still, I'll be longing for one of those birds for a while and I'm sure they're worth every dollar spent :) It's also nice to see theres some other bird nerds out there.....my fixation seems to be what you'd call a, well, unique personality trait ;)

I'm not sure what crafty item I'll attempt next, I still have a lot of material to make several more cats but I actually have very little purpose for them! I've given one to Teddy (who has spent the morning making me a lovely slorg cake!) and one to my mum, and my sister will recieve one when she wings her way back from Melbourne, but the rest are sitting pretty as I decide what the heck to do with them. Regardless, here is a photo of "Isabel" (on the left) and another nameless cat, smiling blankly at the world!

(snicker snicker) i have decided to post. yes, i am still alive for the few that visit this small site of nothingness, i have just been busy. having recently taken up another paper at massey and setting myself the task of creating a small army of cats, i have been keeping myself quite entertained and content without going near the computer. shock horror, considering how it was once described as an extension of my body (!!)

regardless, my little cats have been getting a lot cuter. thankfully they have moved on from prototype cat one (see post below) and are now looking a lot more adorable due to some lovely fabrics i got at spotlight for some VERY cheap prices. heres a picture of a few happy chaps (the fellow on the right's dress is not complete, explaining why it sort of balloons there)

i have also been looking into doing some embroidery. naturally, i stumbled across sublime stiching and was very tempted by the lovely patterns they offer. are they really as simple as everyone seems to think? if you have had a personal experience with all of this, perhaps you could leave a comment. it would only cost about $20 to have about 3 patterns sent to new zealand, but i'm a little cheapskate and like to research first :)

finally, my wonderful 18th birthday present from a special someone was.......an ipod. yes, after aspiring for one for several years and admiring them on shiny shiny, i am now the proud owner of a little pink ipod mini. am very happy :)

on a side note, i wonder how long one should attempt a website which nobody visits?

my first attempt at a toy is quite random looking. based loosely on the kitty from loobylu (who of course should get all credit), it looks more like a wizard in his long coat and his strange starry ears!! i think hes quite cute, however, and am going to attempt making a chicken, or a pukeko (a blue swamp bird). I attempted to replicate one of these little men, but unfortunately the felt i used was not soft enough and all his points were lost and turned into rounded edges. i may attempt another one, but i'll wait till spotlights fabric special. anyway, heres a photo of the pussycat - please excuse the quality, i wasnt entirely sure how to work the camera:

on another note, i still continue to search for rentals in the wellington area to get an idea of what i will be able to get when i attend victoria university next year. while my budget is about $300 per week (including parking) and i should be looking at places like this, i found myself looking at places like THIS. oh, how i am led astray. however, i am not entirely sure what warrants the $900 rent on this property. perhaps i am widely miseducated, but i never knew karaka bay drew such high prices? they arent paying for the furnishings, thats for sure...

on a happier (!!) note, im off to get my MeNZ jab tomorrow. i better get some jellybeans.

havent been up to a lot today, after feeling awful at work and luckily getting into a doctor quickly. have just spent my time reading the rather unfascinating "The First New Zealanders", which focuses mainly on tooth wear and bone patterns. i was seriously off target when i estimated the book could be quite interesting, particularily the parts on how health and disease have affected past populations, or even on diet, but there was just a whole lot on tooth wear. damn exciting.

i was quite happy, however, to find my books from massey universities library had arrived, less than one day after i ordered them. considering its a saturday, its a rare book and its free, i was awfully pleased to see a random old man plonk it on my doorstep. well done massey, you're officially on my christmas card list.

anyway, after much consideration i've decided im going all out and am going to try and create some sort of soft creature. the little chaps (especially the adorable kitties) are so fabulous, im inspired. having not sewn anything for about 5 years i'm slightly nervous about the whole ordeal, but i mean, who could resist? they're just so damn cute. im going to try and create a similar looking toy, as it appears quite simply in its design (i can almost guarantee it is easier said than done...) but i'll just alter it to my own liking - all credit going to loobylu of course. i suppose its just because, if it ends up looking similar, i'll know i was successful. and then i will venture on to more exciting and hopefully self designed projects....well thats the plan anyway. i've found quite a bit of fabric lying around the house, but i'm a bit disappointed that i cannot find much fabric locally. admittedly, i havent looked too far, but apart from grandmothers garden (which features some gorgeous fabric but highly out of my price range), spotlight and the items on trademe, i haven't found much to be excited about. hopefully my venture into wellington will prove more successful.......in the meantime i'm left admiring the lovely little things on craftster.org. im tempted!

perhaps it is my own fault for getting so excited over a disney website. i am 17, i suppose. but after several hours of waiting to get into magic kingdom online, i finally got in to find some horrifically censored little world full of people dashing about trying to win game points. i wasnt even able to ask people where they lived, for gods sake. every country in the world seemed to have its name blocked out, along with half of the dictionary. maybe its just me, but if im encouraged to meet new people, i like to know things like their age and location. obviously these things are "unsafe" (what the hell ISNT unsafe these days) and by wanting to know that, i am a stalker. i was warned several times before eventually logging off. perhaps if i was smart enough to read the 'house rules' i could of seen that this sort of chit-chat wasn't allowed - but lets be honest, i was really just expecting the whole 'dont give out your name and email to strangers' spiel. but i learnt my lesson. what a tedious little game that is.

on a happier note (or is it happier? perhaps this makes me a mean person...) i found this websites. i dont know what i find funnier, the reviewer or those being reviewed. shes a scathing one, that girl. yeowch.

ah, after more hours tinkering and several sore heads, my little piece of the web is now online and for everyone to see. not that im expecting too many visitors, a grand total of 13 came to my last page....its just wonderful to know you're so loved...;)

well, anyway, i hope someone finds some enjoying looking at this little creation. i quite like the layout (of course i will credit pink design for the basic html - and of course you're probably horrified that this website is not validated!!), what with the shag images of the tiki room - and some nice bright colours! if you have any comments or anything is not looking quite right to you, please let me know - i'm learning :)

im watching popetown (currently screening on C4)...not entirely sure what all the fuss is about, although im sure there are some catholics out there that dont like to see a yankie pope tap dancing around and making crude jokes. i, on the other hand, dont mind in the least. currently the pope is playing hide and seek and attempting to enter the 'no pope' door into some sort of slave chamber....most intriguing. perhaps i'm just too liberal, or perhaps i just find catholics funny, but i have to admit i'm not too worried by a pope played by ruby wax. popetown tv is also quite fun.....and the pope seems very happy about having fish fingers.

i still have to emphasize that i am completely in love with that adorable little lamb on loobylu. it almost makes me want to attempt to create something, but then again, my craft projects have never been too successful - think one legged frogs and half moulded plaster of paris animals. perhaps i'll try knitting something else....i have in the past successfully created several knitted australian birds, but lets face it - they're just not that interesting.

i completely forgot about trying to get into disneys virtual magic kingdom.....im most upset as i was quite looking forward to entering!! its not much fun living in a country thats time zone differs so greatly from america. the future isnt that exciting.
